October Newsletter 2024
This month in our ministry, we are excited to announce the arrival of an SD card duplicator! This contribution was made by the Deb Newsome Memorial Fund, which allows us to share digital recordings of the gospel. On these SD cards, we have Bible presentations, movies, and personal testimonies—all available in the local languages. One significant testimony is from the late Deb Newsome, a long-time missionary to The Gambia. She made a tremendous impact during her 30-plus years of devoted service to the Wolof people. Just last month, Michele spoke with a man outside a local shop who was unaware of Deb's passing, which sparked a meaningful conversation. He was thrilled to learn that she had recorded a message, and with the help of the duplicator, Michele was able to give him an SD card so he could hear Deb's testimony for himself.
The Gambian school year begins around mid-September, and many of our neighbors turn to Michele for tutoring services. She regularly works with students to help them improve in subjects ranging from math to English. Regardless of the math lessons, they also benefit from hearing English spoken properly, as Michele teaches in English. One of the students she has been helping is in her 12th-grade year, which is only six months long. From what we understand, this period serves as an intensive review of their high school education, culminating in a final exam to determine eligibility for higher education and even job placement. In addition to tutoring, Michele has taken an active role in the children’s church program at Omega Church, which we have partnered with here in The Gambia. While she enjoys teaching children about God’s love, her heart was especially touched when she trained a new teacher this month to take over her classroom responsibilities.
On a side note, for those inquiring about the generator: it is currently at the port. Praise God! However, it is taking longer than we anticipated to clear customs as we are going on 3 weeks now. Our remaining generator is truly on its last legs; during a recent repair, they resorted to using glue instead of proper fixes. We are praying that it holds out until the new generator arrives. Please join us in praying that it is delivered in November.
